Subject: Chess as a business

I was playing around with the Way Back Machine
(http://www.archive.org/web/web.php) and having fun looking at old computer
chess sites like gambitsoft that I used to visit regularly several years ago.
Seems like once the prices dropped from $100-$150 down to the $50 range the
number of commercial programs dropped and some of those that were left turned
into additional engines for the chessbase interface or similar products.

Did the number of people using chess software go up significantly once the
prices dropped? Or does chessmaster still get the same casual players, while
the "professional" programs have the same customer base and are just charging
less?
