To take a break from all the hardcore technical banter on this site... I purchased Hiarcs 9 to go along with Fritz 8. My first game with Hiarcs, and it actually responded to 1.e4 with 1...e5. Then, it responded to 2.Nf3 with 2...Nc6. We actually got to play the Italian game! Then, a couple of games later, Hiarcs accepted the gambit in an Evans Gambit game. My first game with Fritz 8, and we ended up in a Sicilian variation after 1.e4. Fritz responds to 1.e4 with 1...c5 quite a bit. And, by the way, I used the opening books that came with each engine without messing around with them. I clicked "optimize," and that increased learn value, decreased variety of play, etc. I'm sure there are tons of other differences. For example, I noticed that Hiarcs thinks a lot more. Fritz makes decisions very quickly. Thanks to the folks on this board who suggested Hiarcs when I asked for a program that would play differently from Fritz. They are a fun combo to have on the PC. Now, all I have to do is wait for Shredder 8!
