I don't believe it is a valid fix. I believe that changes to the charter
have to be voted on by the membership. _I_ have never had the opportunity to
cast a vote for any charter change.

Of course, a little thing like this would not stop the ECGA from doing what
they want, I guess. But, as I said previously, if my vote doesn't count, my
membership doesn't count. It will end as of December 31, 2003.

There are a few unhappy faces over here. I attended a computer chess every
year, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987,
1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994. Every year. It was always on
my calendar. My wife and kids knew and expected it. But after 1992, the
ICCA went South, dumped the charter and their responsibilities, and that was
that.

However, I will tell you this. I enjoyed attending those events. Bert Gower
and I traveled every year and met Harry Nelson who also attended them all
once he joined our team in 1980. I hated to see the ACM events end, just
prior to the first Deep Blue match. I hated to see the ICCA stop holding
events on this half of the world. However, fortunately, my penchant for
competing can be satisfied regularly on the chess servers, so that I _really_
find the ECGA both superfluous and out of date. They refuse to mandate auto-
matic interfaces, even if the tournaments are held local. They refuse to
make the event short enough that everyone can attend without it costing a
small fortune. They refuse to balance coverage around the world. They
refuse.. they refuse.. Eventually that incurs a cost.

I'll publish my papers elsewhere. I'll play my chess elsewhere. When enough
reach the same conclusion, the result will be painful. And too late.
