You may try play, playwave, esdplay etc. Make sure you have _no spaces_ in the end of your lines in .Xresources. For example 'play' may work, but 'play ' does not work. And of course reload your .Xresources after you have done your modifications. You can use xrdb -load .Xresources, or restart your X server.
