There are papers here on chess programming:

but probably you should start with the basic concepts instead like here:
http://www.chessville.com/instruction/instr_gen_collection_wisdom_elements.htm

Look up the meaning of all of those expressions.  If your program can do them
and stay fast, it will be really, really good.
