I just haven't had the chance to personally run on one of those yet, and the opteron experience has been all good so far. The main thing I like about the Opteron is that it doesn't require any "new" assembly language programming knowledge. X86 stuff works just fine, and 64 bit stuff works with just register name changes... Itanium is a horse of a completely different color... However, I must say that the inline assembly I did is not a remarkable speedup like it is on the X86 architecture. So it might not be that great should someone do it on the Itanium either. If you stick with pure C, then the differences are moot and the fastest processor is the one to pick. I have no idea what that might be at the present.
