Things are very different here. The universities and such are usually
to a large extend controlled by the state, and firing someone isn't
done lightly.

If a professor can't be present due to something of greater importance,
you'd better be able to study on your own.

Shrug, he's representing the reputation of the University Of Alabama in
an international event of high scientific value. (That's how I sold myself)
