This is Java and you will not need to download any special software. You will see at least 1000 people playing chess here at one time. If you are running IE4 browser and you click on Tools....Newsgroups...type the word chess and highlight the group and click on subscribe you will be setting up several newsgroups where you can talk to many people about a game of chess.
