Sorry for the delay, that was caused by my holidays.
The 11th game saw both engines repeating the controversial Archangelsk line of
game 9. This probably reveals a bug in the ChessBase booklearner code,
as this game had been lost by Junior. I checked to see if learning works in
general, and it does. I suspect a misfeature of Junior's "optimal" book settings
here.
I still think 16..d5 !? should be delayed for one more move, and that 16..h6
should be played first, but it's hard to argue with these tactical monsters .. ;
it's definitely a fascinating line.
This time (probably due to minimal differences in operator speed) Crafty played
the very dubious novelty 18. a4?!, that invites Junior's logical 18. .. e4!?
(only 1:06, played surprisingly fast).
After the pawn sac 19. ...e3!? we have the usual scenario again: Crafty up some
material, both engines very happy. In this game they were about 2-3 pawns away
from each other in the critical stages.
I think Junior was right in principle but maybe a bit too happy statically.
21...Bd6! looks like a clear improvement for black to me reaching more than
sufficient compensation, where 21....b4?! looks strange and
probably spoils most of it and makes progress very difficult. Humans probably
would think higher of their great bishop pair.
Alhough:
Crafty 19.4 - Junior 8.0.0.2
[D]3rr1k1/1b3ppp/p1n2n2/2q5/Pp6/2P1P2P/1PB1QRP1/RNB3K1 b - - 0 1
Whatever the truth about this position: Junior's 25...b3?! looks like a very
cool idea.
Junior seemed to have about sufficient compensation for the now two pawns less,
but not more.
Without endless analysis with computers I am not so sure about the critical
points in this highly tactical game and when Crafty spoilt it, but one
interesting thing - white's black-squared bishop didn't make a single move until
move 38, when
its development 38. Bb2? was probably still a mistake - don't develop your
pieces too early :)!
Crafty 19.4 - Junior 8.0.0.2
[D]4r1k1/5pp1/3r3p/pP6/P1qNb3/R1PnP2P/3R2P1/2B2QK1 w - - 0 1
What a game !!
Standing: Junior 3 - Crafty 4 ( 4 draws)
