When you run engine-engine matches in Fritz GUI, you can set the opening book
usage for each engine separately.

For example, assume you want to watch a game Fritz vs Crafty. You choose the
opening book of your taste for White (but it has to be a Chessbase opening book
that is, its extension has to be .ctg), assume it is fritz8.ctg.

Now you choose the opening book for Crafty (Black). To be sure, you can choose
a Chessbase book, even the same fritz8.ctg. In this case, the GUI (not Crafty
itself) will be making the initial moves.

But probably you want to make Crafty to use its own opening book, that called
book.bin, which lies in the Crafty folder. In this case, you could choose *no
book*. This doesn't mean that Crafty plays without book. That means that *the
GUI* doesn't make the initial moves- Crafty choose its own moves from the start.
But, as the Crafty engine knows it has to consult the book.bin file, this will
imply that Crafty will be playing with its own opening book from the start. As
you want.

This applies to any other Winboard (or UCI) engine as well: if you put "no
book" under Fritz GUI, then the engine will use its own book.

You should imagine that the option "no book" doesn't mean that the engine will
play without book. Nothing of the sort. "No book" means the same that telling
the GUI "put the fucking hands off", or, more diplomatically, "no thanks, Crafty
has its personal opening book and it is perfectly able to play the opening
without your help".
