How can the rules be clearer? The operator can not do _anything_ but enter moves, make moves on the board, and respond to requests about time left on the clock, as per the tournament rules. I don't think losing due to a bug would taint the results at all. I lost multiple games due to bugs, over the years. Deep Thought lost to fritz in 1995 when they had a communication failure. Deep Thought lost a game in Cape May due to a complete power failure at Watson research center. This has happened way too many times to be an issue. But not operator intervention.
