That update makes some changes to the True 3D mode and perhaps some other GUI changes. It also changes the engine version (which you can check by right clicking onto the Fritz 8 engine file in the "Engines" folder, and selecting properties and then the Version Tab) from version 8.0.0.8, to version 8.0.0.23. This is the same engine update that has been out for many many months. In Properties>General Tab, it will probably read Modified: Sunday, March 02, 2003 6:18:34 PM. Earlier updates made some changes to the GUI as well, True 3D mode for one, by adding some options to the True 3D settings. Earlier CD versions of Fritz 8 had the engine version 8.0.0.8. Earlier updates made some GUI changes and changed the Fritz 8 engine to version 8.0.0.23. With this recent update the engine version will still be 8.0.0.23. As I understand it, I could be wrong, but the latest CD version is 8.0.0.26. I hear that this is on the latest Deep-Fritz 8 version. This may also be on the latest Fritz 8 CD versions as well, but that I do not know. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT !!! First, make a copy or copies of the 8.0.0.8 engine if that is what you still have and place it in some other folder, on a CD or Floppy or zip file or where ever you like. Just as long as you have another copy of the 8.0.0.8 engine. Many have not been happy with the 8.0.0.23 engine. You can always take the 8.0.0.23 engine out of the Engines folder and replace it with 8.0.0.8. and visa versa. Some also save extra an copy/copies of the UPDATE file which is the GUI8 (IUP File 7,354 KB) which is in the ChessProgram8 folder, and place that elsewhere for safe keeping as well. The earlier updates made some changes to the True 3D settings, offering changes such as which way the Knights could face. First, right now from the previous update or cd version, in the View menu, you will see the option True 3D, after the recent update, it will no longer read as that, but will now read as 3D... The recent update makes even more changes to that by offering MIRROR to the knight facings so that your white Knights can face each other or face away from each other or change the angles of which way they will face. The same option for Black as well. This will also have a Full Screen 3D selection as well. To get out of that screen and back to a regular 3D screen you can hit escape key or Cntrl+Alt+3 or Cntrl+Alt+2 to bring you back into regular 2D screen, since in the Full Screen 3D you won't have a menu to make selections from. ALSO IMPORTANT, The "M" and "N" keys lowered and raised the 3D board, now after the recent update these keys will no longer have this function. The "X" and "V" keys will now lower and raise the board. These changes are not mentioned by Chessbase in anywhere I could find. I found out about the X and V key changes thru some one on this site as well as the escape key to get out of Full Screen 3D. Unfortunately, Chessbase does not tell us about all of these changes. I am sure there are other changes to the GUI that I have not yet noticed, as well as some underlying changes that you or I would never know about. What I did find early on when only using the early CD version with the 8.0.0.8 engine version, that the program would HANG up a lot on me. It would take forever to shut down or so it seemed. After the first update this problem disappeared. I heard that computers with 1 Gig of RAM were having problems. I have 1 GIG of RAM. I hope this helps you or others in some way, rather than having to ask more questions to find the raise and lower keys like I did and perhaps some other SILLY questions. It would be nice if Chessbase would give a list of changes. Now.... How hard could that really be ??? Makes no sense to me !! Take care and Happy Holidays Brian
