It gives the new date of (Dec 02 2003) after the upgrade. That can be checked (If you don't already know) by clicking onto Help>About Fritz 8 and you will see the new date in the title bar of that window. This upgrade does not change the engine from 8.0.0.23 to anything. It stays the same. It will however, change the engine from 8.0.0.8 to 8.0.0.23. It does make some changes to the GUI in the 3D mode for one. I have two computers. My older computer was upgraded from the CD Version to the Date in the Help> About Fritz 8 to (Nov 13 2003) and the engine changed from 8.0.0.8 to 8.0.0.23. There were also some changes to the GUI. Some True 3D changes then as well. I did the same on my new computer. The same changes took place. For various reasons, I uninstalled and reinstalled the Fritz 8 program on my new computer. Just recently, the Playchess Server offered the upgrade to both computer Fritz 8 programs. I ran both. The old computer encountered some 3D option changes but the date in the Help>About Fritz 8 window stayed at (Nov 13 2003) which is the date from the previous upgrade. However, the date in the new computer Help>About Fritz 8 changed to (Dec 02 2003) Go figure. There were changes made to the old computer, so the upgrade did take affect. In any event, the changes in this recent upgrade will make some changes to the GUI and change the 8.0.0.8 engine to 8.0.0.23. If you have the previous upgrade, your engine will have changed from 8.0.0.8 to 8.0.0.23. If for some reason after the previous upgrade, assuming you kept a copy/copies of the 8.0.0.8 engine, you placed the 8.0.0.8 engine back into the engine folder and removed the 8.0.0.23 engine, (as many have done), the Playchess Server will not recognize the fact that you do not have the 8.0.0.23 engine in your folder. It only detects the GUI as far as that goes. When running the upgrade, then it will change the engine from 8.0.0.8 to 8.0.0.23. Since the upgrade file is in the ChessProgram 8 folder, you can always run that upgrade when you like. You can also keep copies of the upgrade files in case you wish to convert the GUI back to a previous upgade. Below is some changes to the GUI from the recent upgrade that I found...... It will make some 3D...Option changes in the Settings window. For one, it will give you a Full Screen 3D....Which will do just what it says, FULL SCREEN and nothing else on it. That means that you have no ICONS or menu selections to choose from. In that case the Escape key will bring you back or Cntrl+Alt+3 will bring you back as well. Cntrl+Alt+2 will bring you back to a 2D screen. In the settings window in the 3D...mode you will have the option of MIRROR for the Knights in the 3D Graphics window. You can have the White Knights facing each other, or facing away from each other or any angle in between. You can to the same for the Black pieces as well. Also, the M and N keys will no longer lower or raise the board, the X and V keys will now do that. Hope this helps somewhat. Always by the way keep spare copies of engines and put them away for safe keeping.......Floppy, CD, DVD, Zip File or some other folder on your harddrive. You may want to use it again. Such is the case with the 8.0.0.8 and 8.0.0.23 engine. Many are not happy with 8.0.0.23. Happy Holidays Brian
