Subject: Playing Against Deep Fritz 8

I have had the opportunity to play a small amount of games (10 + 5) versus the
new Deep Fritz 8 on Playchess.com. While my hardware is certainly not a
powerhouse (P3 1000mz, 512mb, Shredder 7.04) I do as well as one could expect
with what I have.

My first 5 games vs DF8 resulted in 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses so I was
somewhat puzzled by these results. I experiment a lot with engine settings and
opening books and on occasion I find something that really performs well for a
short series of games. These games were using new and untried settings. After
these games I certainly wasn't condemning DF8 and its capabilities for my first
results so I just wrote it off as possibly the new owner's just getting used to
it and perhaps setting it up. And I realize 5 games certainly does not prove
anything EXCEPT there is no way I should have these statistics against the new
DF8.

Feeling somewhat cocky I ran across Andre van Ark using DF8 on Playchess.com for
2 games (10 + 10). Both games I was about even on eval through opening book and
somewhat after. About 20 - 30 moves into each game DF8 showed what it had. I
was methodically and systematically destroyed and literally ground up and spit
out and I am not sure even with stronger hardware the outcome would have been
any different. Now THAT is what I expected in the first place in all games and
the new DF8 certainly now has my full respect and attention!
