Because the rules say that a 3-fold rep is a draw. I think it is worthwhile to add that SHREDDER apparently went for the 3-fold _although_ it had a won position. So - it is _not_ totally irreal. But this stupidity in a program has nothing to do with how in - computerchess - the 3-fold rep should be handled. Or is it a reasonable position to whine that SHREDDER is normally the best and therefore he should not be disadvantaged for his _own_ stupidity? I think that is probably the main twist why so many people tried to "change" the rules for computerchess. But in reality these rules are clear. If there is a 3-fold factually on the board and the machine pops up no matter on the second move or before the third, the operator has to claim a draw. Very easy. All other solutions are cheating. Also the opposing operator has seen the pop-up and can therefore inform the arbiter if the operator on the move doesn't react properly. I would go so far that we have two possibilities only: (1) Operator acts along the rules and claims a draw no matter what the text of the 3-fold pop-up or (2) Operator doesn't react for reasons unknown - then this is cheating and the arbiter must be informed; the operator has NOT the right to ignore his machine's signals. Arbiter in case (2) should ban the operator and call the game officially a draw. If he would call it a loss for the failing operator's side then this operator probably had got the results he wanted, like Zwanzger, the operator of Jonny vs Shredder. Rolf
