Although I've never had the honours to see one up close and in action, the only
machine that seems to fit that description, is the Novag Robot Adversary. It
certainly made odd sounds, eletrical etc., when losing and if it were toast it
would pick up its King and drop it, signifing its resignation. I don't know
about every detail so I could be wrong here....

My answer is the Novag Robot Adversary, first sold in 1982.
