Mike,

Your other post demonstrating the analysis with and without TBs has solved the
mystery. I was starting the analysis by pressing the analysis button in Arena. I
have an rc. file that looks like this:

hash 24M
hashp 5M
cache 0M
drawscore=0
log off
book on
book random 1
book width 5
learn 7
resign 9

I removed the last two lines referring to TBs (and left the blank line). I
usually use Mark Van der Leek's "Chess Pad" for quick analyses and have found
that it does not respond correctly when TBs are enabled. (Nothing much gets
posted in the analysis window, nor is it updated.) My earlier statement about
not having TBs was not 100% accurate. I have 3 and 4 men complete but don't have
them enabled with Crafty for the reason noted above. I mentioned the problem to
Mark but he didn't really understand my problem. It was easier to just dis-able
them in Crafty's case. It seems as you've noted that here Crafty needs them.

Jim
