Many seem to think that 8.0.0.8 is stronger than 8.0.0.23.
Also, there is a wierd bug in 8.0.0.23 which prevents black from capturing on e4
with the Knight in some positions, as I will give below. A position where
8.0.0.8 and almost any other chess engine will take the pawn on e4.
I do not know if this only applies to knight captures on e4. Here is the
position. If you have both engines 8008 and 80023, you can witness this by
trying each engine separately. Meaning that you cannot have both in the engine
folder at the same time. You can, but it will only recognize one of them only.
So you use one, then remove it, and then place a copy of the other one in the
engine folder. Easier yet would be to make a few separate folders. One for a
copy of 8.0.0.8 with let's say the name Engines 8.0.0.8 and another for 8.0.0.23
with the name Engines 8.0.0.23.

What I would then do is rename your Engine folder to let's say AEngine. You
cannot of course have more than one folder with the identical name.
So, after you rename the Engines folder as just mentioned, you simply rename the
Engines 8.0.0.8 folder to Engines by simply removing the 8.0.0.8 part of the
name. This makes it quite easy to switch back and forth. You can then rename the
new Engines folder which only has the 8.0.0.8 engine in it back to Engines
8.0.0.8 and then do the same with the Engines 8.0.0.23. Remove the 8.0.0.23 part
of the name and you again have the Engines folder only with the 80023 engine in
it. You may have to close out of Fritz each time you do this. It may keep the
present engine in RAM and not acknowledge the change with the same name engine.
Since all the versions show in the engines window as just Fritz 8.
The position (and there are others as well, that many have posted)is down below.
Interesting here is that 8.0.0.23 will not take the pawn on e4 with the knight,
however, if you place the f3 Knight on g1 in this position, then the black
knight will capture the pawn on e4.
Fritz 8.0.0.8 and almost all, if not all engines will take this pawn on e4.
You can of course check the engine version by Right clicking on the particular
engine file>Properties>Version Tab. You will see the Version number.
