Why do you want to turn them off? I've had problems with my op system when the tablebases are accessed constantly in endgames. It slows down the computer and the chess software itself a great deal. Sometimes the nodes/second is only a small fraction of the speed without tablebase access. I may have helped myself recently by installing a second hard drive with several partitions, with the tablebases on their own dedicated partition, on a different drive than the pagefile. That way the drive heads can work on the tablebases in dedicated fashion, while the drive heads on a different drive manage the pagefile and op system. I haven't tested it enough yet to know how much improvement is involved, but it sounds good in theory. WP
