To see if a given engine can find it's way through certain endings on it's own. Lack of space do to too much swapping during the game, which could be the case if one does not have enough space on the harddrive, ora slow processor, slowing down the calculations in the middlegame rather than using the Tablebases during the endgame, or as it is approaching the endgame. Perhaps you are playing against someone else's computer who does not have Tablebases or all of the Tablebases. Shutting them off would give a fairer game. I am sure that many of you may have numerous reasons to use an engine without Tablebases. Brian
