Yes that must be it, my detector triggers only if the king is in the corner so
that line above isn't detected as a draw.

The problem is it's not always a draw if the other king or pawn can reach the
promoting square first.
I guess I need to evaluate the races to the corner in order to get this a few
plies earlier.

What I dread, is that with enemy bishops on the board the lone king has to run
in zig-zags across the board and that complicates the task quite a lot AFAICT.

That's why I'm surprised so many gets it so fast, perhaps there is a simpler way
I haven't thought of or perhaps their detector is more "speculative". :)

It doesn't hurt to "look good" :)

Actually, I think if one adds enough of these primitive pieces of knowledge,
then sooner or later it will decide some games.

Though with endgame tables it must be questionable how much it helps.
