ok just added a few things to like smpmt=2 to .craftyrc but now I get:
{eriq@merlin} ~/Crafty> ./crafty
unable to open book file [./book.bin].
book is disabled
unable to open book file [./books.bin].
noise level set to 1500000.
draw score set to   -0.01 pawns.
resign after 5 consecutive moves with score < -4.
PGN save complete.

Crafty v19.8
