Hello No. You do not need DirectX to run Fritz 8 but you need it to run the True 3D, which by the way now shows as 3D...under the view menu after the recent upgrades. That is by the way for the Photo Realistic 3D chessboard. I am running the Fritz 8 program on two computers. One being an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 1 GIG DDR SDRAM and using DirectX with full use of the True 3D Graphics. On my older computer which is only a Pentium II 350 MHz with 384 SDRAM, the setup would not allow me to load the DirectX. Nevertheless, I completed the setup. To the best of my knowledge, the only function that I do not have without DirectX, is the True 3D capabilities. Everything else seems to work just fine. I have not yet encountered problems of any kind. So once again, you do not need DirectX to run Fritz 8. You just will not have use of the True 3D function. Regards Brian
