        The position above, which is the one we have been looking at for the
past few days, is pretty interesting in that if you have the Tablebases turned
on, it finds the solution
correctly with also the correct =(0.00) evaluation that some engines don’t give.
This is an 8 piece endgame, yet the program sees through to a 5 piece endgame
with the Tablebases. That is pretty impressive. It finds the solution as =(0.00)
rather than =(0.12). Most engines without Tablebases, find the correct sequence
of moves, with basically a drawn evaluation, but some don’t realize that the
evaluation should be =(0.00)

 Below, is a similar position to the one we have been looking for the last few
days. I expanded on the position as mentioned by one of the posters by adding a
file h pawns and moving the Black King to h8.
This position is a 13 piece endgame. Let’s see if the Tablebases can see Thru 13
pieces to a 5 piece endgame.

This was after almost an hour and a half of analysis with the Tablebases turned
on. Tablebase setting of 3 in Engine Parameters. Then again at a setting of 0
(Zero).
Beneath that will be a Half Hour of analysis without the use of Tablebases.
Notice, without the Tablebases, it takes longer to evaluate the position even
though this is not a 5 piece ending. The last analysis showing was at 59 min, 40
secs with the Tablebase setting of 3. Further down I also have analysis with the
Tablebase setting lowered to 0 rather than the default setting of 3. There are
some interesting differences….
Below that will be with no Tablebases at all For Fritz 8.
After that you will see YACE PADERBORN FINDING = (0.00) IN ONLY 8 SECONDS!!

Below I have the analysis with the Tablebases turned on with a Parameter setting
of  0. (Zero) The lower the setting, the more Tablebase hits. The higher the
setting, the less Tablebase hits.
Notice the difference in the analysis times and the evaluations. With the
Default Tablebase setting as above, the closest evaluation to a draw was =
(0.19) reached at 59 min, 40 seconds, and that was the last showing evaluation
after one and a half hours.

In the below example, with the Tablebase setting set at 0, = (0.19) evaluation
was reached at only 00:26:48 and = (0.03) was reached at 00:55:15. At  02:24:06
it displayed another evaluation or = (0.03). Notice the kN count (7,669,142)and
also the tb=4,252,495. Also, notice the Depth of 30/98. I stopped the analysis
at approx. 4 hours, with no change since the 02:24:06 mark. It appears that the
Tablebases , or at least the more frequent TB hits do make a difference in the
outcome.
How will this affect playing strength?
Question: If you have a fast processor, will the engine play stronger with the
lower Tablebase setting? It has been said that setting it too low, allowing more
and earlier Tablebase hits, can slow down the engine, but if it can see further
into the position , won’t it increase the playing strength. I can see if a slow
processor is being used, a problems may result, resulting in a slowdown, but in
this case, I am using an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 1 Gig DDR SDRAM.
