I was expecting more specific answers (many thanks also to Bob and Henrik), but your range seems to be pretty accurate. As I expect that you probably own Deep Junior and Shredder too, how do the numbers look for them? But the general answer is already given I suppose, HT really isn't very important when it is about engine speed. I was considering to get another computer for Christmas mainly but not only for chess purposes, but I have to find a somehow reasonable argument to do so ;). I already own a speedy XP2600+ that I got last year - it still looks decent now, so it seems it was a good buy. What's the cool thing to get these days ( in a reasonable prize range)? Is there anything twice as fast as the XP2600+ already? Sorry for my ignorance - I am not well informed when it is about hardware development. My own little research came up with the Athlon 64 3200+ - but it probably is not that much better - I remember some posts by GCP that showed it might still be great for some chessprograms though.
