The Athlon XP is still quite a bit faster than a P4 for chess and the Opteron/Athlon 64/Athlon FX is MUCH faster (32bit or 64bit). If you'd like an extremely fast chess box without paying an arm and a leg, try the Athlon 64 3200+. If you'd like the fastest dual go for a dual Opteron 248 setup.
