I have spoken to Andrew Tridgell, author of KnightCap about this. He has uses
something he calls 'Demensure'. The idea is that the computer just doesn't look
at some moves. Of course all the moves at the root are searched, but after that,
some % are simply removed. He has managed to make some very human like weakened
versions of his program, so it seems to have worked very well for KnightCap,
although I havn't tried it myself.
