After nearly 40+ years of being one of top 100 chess players, 72 years young ,
Viktor Korchnoi (b 1931), has dropped out of the top 100 rating list. A record
that will be tough to match by anyone. GM Korchnoi is widely considered one of
the strongest players ever not to win a World Championship title. He battled
Anatoly Karpov for the World title in match play twice (1975 and 1981). In
addition, he had lost to Karpov in 1974 in the Candidates tournament. Karpov
subsequently gained the tile by default when the match with Fischer could not be
organized. Both in 1974 and 1978, Kortchnoi lost to Karpov by one game.

GM Karpov (b 1951) , 20 years younger than Kortchoi, is now the senior player on
the top 100 list. He is currently ranked 21st in the world with a rating of
2682.
