Subject: 1. Engine League with Fritz5.32/Nimzo99

Author: CLiebert

25.11.1998
EngineLeague/Tournaments

We have played welcome engine- tournaments with the new fritz5.32 and nimzo99
engines.
Conditions:

- K6-II-300, 16-20MB HT
- 10 min./game
- one book for all: general-tree of fritz5.32
(has no specialisation for one engine)
- nodes per seconds (middle game/late middle game): 120.000-150.000/ 170.000
- F5-Autoplayer (without permanent brain)

The range of nodes per second I have seen (not exactly)
	Typical (Middlegame)	Top (late middlegame)
Nimzo99:	220.000-270.000 300.000
Crafty:	120.000-150.000 170.000
Junior46	140.000-200.000 250.000
Junior5	230.000-300.000 370.000
Fritz5.16	240.000-330.000 430.000
Fritz5.32	250.000-350.000 450.000
Hiarcs6	26.000-40.000 50.000

 "Nimzo Begrüßungs-Blitz-Turnier" (10m, K6-300, 16MBHT, Nimzo99- Buch, 4 Runden)

1. Fritz5.32	xx	1,5:2,5	3,5:0,5	3:1	3,5:0,5	11,5/16
2. Junior5	2,5:1,5	xx	2,5:1,5	2,5:1,5	3:1	10,5
3. Crafty 15.18	0,5:3,5	1,5:2,5!	Xx	3,5:0,5	2,5:1,5	8
4. Hiarcs6 1:3	1,5:2,5	0,5:3,5	xx	2:2	5
5. Nimzo99	0,5:3,5	1:3	1,5:2,5	2:2	xx	5
40 Partien

For the second tournament we changed the book, played two more rounds and add
two players: Jun46 and F5.15. In summary 126 games, so this result will be much
more reliable.

"Nimzo99/Fritz5.32- Begrüßungs-Blitz-Turnier" (10m, K6-300, 20MBHT,General-Buch,
6 Runden)
(1. Fritz-Engines Liga)

1. Fritz5.32	24,5 /36	412
2. Junior5 24,5	389
3. Hiarcs6	2:4	19,0
4. Fritz5.16	16,5
5. Junior45	16,0
6. Nimzo99	14,5
7. Crafty15.18	11,0

Short remarks (blitz!): the new Junior and Fritz5.32-Engines are much better
than the rest of the field. Fritz5.16 had a very bad start, after two rounds he
was at the last place. Nimzo will compete with the older engines, against the
newer ones he has no chance (blitz!). In this tournament he has no luck and does
not win a direct competition. Crafty has contact and stopped Fritz5.32 from
winning this event! Both tournaments together he wins against Nimzo!!

All tournaments (there are a lot more) are played automatically by Fritz5.32. It
is a fantastic new function which
allows to organize you own tournaments (including generating a crosstableau).
For the german computerchess magazin CSS we are working out a new Fritz-Liga
Concept (Blitz) by using this utility. Also an Engine Masters 1998 with only the
best engine of each author. We are just considering, suggestions are welcome
(Email below).
I think the first six engines will belong to the "1. Fritz-Engine-Liga". During
the next days we will play the "2. Fritz-Engine-Liga" with the following
engines:
1. Crafty 15.18 (the last of the 1. Liga)
2. Fritz4
3. Crafty 16.01
4. Crafty 14.12 (perhaps)
5. Comet A97
6. Doctor3
7. Exchess 2.51 (the last one plays next time in the 3. Liga)

The number of engines will increase next year, so this is only the beginning!
More details to the tournaments, games, results you will read in the next issue
of CSS (ComputerChess&Games) or as soon as possible on our new german website
(www.computerschach.de) which is still under construction (start 1.1.99).
