the move a3 is not useless.
the idea is (after e6 is played) not to allow Bb4. we need the knight,
we cannot allow to pin it.
it would be contra-productive to the opening to allow black to pin the knight.

i was not talking about genius in specific. i was talking in general that a3
from tansposition in french opening makes sense.
when you transpose from french opening, you need to play a3 soon, otherwise the
knight gets pinned before you can arrange f3 and other moves.
