Subject: [slightly OT] How to find a patent ?

Hi there,
after all the discussions to Gothic Chess below, I wonder how to find out if a
patent to something exist in the first place; imagine you want to program a new
chess variant engine?
(For example, I was looking for a patent of a method, which is very similar to
what I invented. Although I know the name of the method (MethylScope or
GeneTresher) I can't find the patent). I tried it on the US patent & Trademark
office (search for terms) and in the Canadian Patents database. No success. Then
I tried to find Gothic Chess and again I could not get a result (yeah, I saw the
link below, of course); but how do I find them in a search?

Thanks
Axel
