Hiarcs' 5' tactical skills seem superior to Shredder's. Definetely true, although the difference certainly isn't big from a human viewpoint :-). But I got the same impression from test positions, in terms of solving times within 1 min. maximum (the number of solutions was nearly equal, Hiarcs 9 21/24 and Shredder 7.SE 20/24). >If I get time, I'll try a long time-control match and switch opening books. Clearly this isn't much of a factor at longer >time-controls where quality of moves played prevails. Interesting thoughts. The H9 book has been somewhat critizised after release, containing some doubtful or even clearly bad moves it containes. Maybe not a decisive number. As for longer time controls, take a look at this tournament which is currently running (90m+30s): http://www.utzingerkurt.com/5moves.htm It is played with a "neutral," 10 plies deep opening book which all engines use. Currently Hiarcs 9 is leading. Regards, M.Scheidl
