For sure for different other software (grafic software and so on) but > for computer chess? as usual: it depends. Of course the engine will get more nps on a Dual when hyperthreading is activated and 4 threads (because we have 4 virtual CPUs) are useable. And this depends on the engine. To use 4 CPUs with a dual you need the server version of Windows 2000. Windows 2000 and Windows XP only support 2 CPUs. (For the OS a Dual with activated hyperthreading is a Quad) Afaik you get around 30% more nps with activated hyperthreading per CPU - with a factor of 1.7 of the paralizing algorithms this might be not enough. Of course it is a different story when you have a factor of 1.8 or more or when the speed up is equal or higher then 1.8. When I have seen it correctly the Fritz team usual activate hyperthreading on their Duals, SMK does not. IIRC Bob said once that hyperthreading is good for Crafty. By the way: Of course you can't make a tourney with ponder=on on a single machine with activated hyperthreading. The real CPU time they will get will be very random. When you look back a bit in the archives of CCC there were several discussions about this. Greets, Thomas P.S.: Get an Opteron System - no hyperthreading and more power... :)
