Subject: Moderation: Gothic chess does not belong here

Go up one level in this thread

I disagree with your post, Martin. I've added the word "Moderation" to your
topic, so that I can call down a decision from one of our moderating Gods.

This forum is about computers and chess, the word "and" being used in the strict
boolean sense, ie not in the colloquial sense. To paraphrase... this forum is
about chess being played by computers. Sometimes the moderators tolerate threads
about chess without any relevance to computers (for instance, Kortchnoi dropping
out of FIDE's top 100). Sometimes they tolerate threads about computers without
direct relevance to chess (for instance, a report on new PC hardware). Sometimes
they even tolerate threads about computer games other than chess (for instance,
the frequent threads about checkers endgame tablebases).

If a game is a chess variant, it is by definition related to chess. It's a
"variation of chess". Fischer Random Chess and Shuffle Chess are two other chess
variants recently discussed. If the threads are about running chess variants on
computers, the threads are IMHO well within the bounds of this forum. Even the
posts about the legality of programming Gothic Chess without paying the license
fee -- I personally find these posts very annoying -- are withing the bounds of
"computer chess". They belong in this forum. Where else?

Let's not keep our heads in the sand. I'm sure classical chess will never die.
But as time goes by certain variants may spring up as popular alternatives. (To
take another example, the existence and local popularity of "Australian Rules
Football" will never destroy "classical Rugby"). This forum is a good place to
talk about novelties. If someone has programmed a chess variant and wants to
promote it, let him tell us where to get a copy for free download. This will
help the programmer to propogate his game, and it will help the rest of us to
open our eyes to alternatives to classical chess.
