The newest GCC has been right about equal or slightly better than VC6 Pro (for me), and the Intel compiler was good for about a 20% speed boost (using PGO, IPO, etc.). I'm not sure about the newer MS compilers (VC6 is the only one I have). I think Visual Studio .NET 2004 is supposed to come out in the next few months (maybe in May?), if you can wait. You will probably be able to get a good upgrade deal if you are an owner of a previous version. Last time I think you could upgrade to VS .NET 2003 for like $30 if you owned previous versions, but that offer was only good for a certain period of time (you can't get it that cheap anymore), so if you decide to go with .NET 2004, get it soon after it comes out so you can get the good deal (otherwise the upgrade is like $500-600!).
