I played another game against the Bill Angel CapaGNU program, this time letting his program search a minimum of 8 plies for each move (it took 4-6 minutes per move on my 2.8 GHz P4) just to see if search depth would help. Very early in the game CapaGNU allowed its Archbishop to be traded for a Bishop and Knight, a very bad trade, and Vortex went on to win without too much difficulty. Another thing I noticed: when CapaGNU first sees that it will be mated in N moves, it will just make any legal move that results in it be mated in 1. This game will be posted to... http://www.GothicChess.org/matches.html ...later today. Based on the very early results so far, here is how I would rank the programs. 1. Gothic Vortex 2. Gothic Vortex with Reinhardt values 3. TSCP Gothic 4. Capa GNU 5. Zillions
