Is that better than giving +10 or -19 in a position that is a draw?  Either way,
you fail sometimes.  The code is pretty restrictive about when it calls the draw
detection routine, so there aren't very many "real" positions where it even
applies.  But I'd like to hope that in cases where it does apply, it's right
more often than it's wrong (whereas without the code, Crafty would *always* be
wrong).
I didn't write that code to be perfect.  For one, I'm not that good a
programmer.  If anyone cares to improve on it, I'd be very happy.
