Some bold leader come forward and make a proposal. Most of the creative chess programmers are NOT working for profit, and are not going to shell out a fee to belong to a standards comittee that has nothing to offer THEM, the AUTHORS, who do this for their enjoyment, not yours. I for one am happy with my freeware engine and freeware database, the only price I have to pay is dealing with freeware utilities to convert from one format to another. The commercial vendors, on the other hand, are not likely to be tempted by the few diehards that buy every upgrade to every program. Most people are quite happy to get their heads handed to them by whatever program they bought at whatever version. In short, I don't think there's a market for the boys with the money to push a standard, nor an incentive for the tinkerers to submit to a standard. Pat
