I think, there are many types of positions. One example: typical black position after castling king side, bK g8, bP f7, g6, h7. White has a pwan on f6. Now white needs a couple of moves, to get his Q to h6, and mate with Qh6-h7. Perhaps on the way, white even gives material. An engine might easily see PVs like Qh3 null (fails high for black) Qh6 null. Those null moves will "eat" a lot of depth, before seeing the real threat. It has nothing to do with Zugzwang.
