Go up one level in this thread
Hello Bob
I will have a bash at explaining.
You are correct to say you dont get source code on the CD.
The author of the program uses a compiler to translate the high level language
source code to an executable file e.g "Shredder.exe". The high level language
could be theoretically be Fortran ;-) but in reality these days would likely be
"C" or "C++"
The Shredder program on your CD will contain more than just the executable EXE
file. For example, it might have some dynamic link libraries( "*.DLL" files),
graphics files, text files, help files to name but a few.
That is where the Installation wizard comes in, it is a program that runs to
write all of these various files onto your hard drive from your CD. The Install
wizard does other jobs like registers what it needs to with the Windows OS, (so
that it can run and also later be uninstalled), checks various Windows OS files
to make sure they are up to date etc.
Hope that helped your understanding a little.
