Generally speaking yes they are compacted. For Windows the software CD will
generally have on it the "setup.exe" program (the install wizard itself) and a
bunch of "*.CAB" files
This is short for "Cabinet" file and is essentially Microsoft's version of a Zip
file.

No. The installer will basically just decompress the contents of the *.CAB files
and plonk them in the install folder you requested. Nothing as complicated as an
intermediate self compile.
