Gothic Vortex employs an asymmetric evaluation function. Occasionally this produces slightly negative evaluations for both sides. Players have been sending me games played at fast time controls (10 seconds per move or quicker) where Vortex does some unusual things, like sacrifice its Archbishop to get a 3-fold repetition draw using only its knight! The interim solution would seem to be to return a negative score for draws earlier in the game, then gradually bring the score to 0 as the game progresses. Has anyone implemented a decaying contempt factor for draws in their own code?
