It's Kasparov vs. Deep Blue in new film
CECIL ROSNER - CHESS CHESS players and documentary buffs are looking
forward to the release this month of a new film by Oscar-winning director
Vikram Jayanti.
Jayanti is perhaps most famous for When We Were Kings, the
brilliantly-told story of the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" between boxers
Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Zaire. Another recent Jayanti film
garnering attention is an expose of the Golden Globe Awards, called
Hollywood's Dirty Little Secret.
This time, Jayanti turns his attention to chess and the most famous
encounter ever between a human and a chess-playing computer. Game Over:
Kasparov and the Machine is set for theatrical release on Jan. 23.
The hint of conspiracy is a recurring theme in many of Jayanti's films,
and this one is no different. The 1997 match between Gary Kasparov and IBM's
Deep Blue was touted as the ultimate man-versus-machine encounter in
history. Far more than chess was at stake.
Jayanti paints a portrait of a computer company needing a public
relations boost, and seeing this match as the perfect opportunity. Doubts
are raised about exactly how the computer pulled off its surprise win.
While the film doesn't directly accuse IBM of cheating, all the hints are
there. A day after Deep Blue's victory, IBM shares surged. And the company
quickly dismantled Deep Blue so a rematch wouldn't be possible.
The film won positive reviews when it was screened at the Toronto
International Film Festival in the fall. Its worldwide release is sure to
enhance interest in chess.
