Subject: Limited Usefulness of Variation Board in Main Engine Pane

This is from a user's perspective.

The variation board in the main engine pane is familiar to everybody who uses
commercial chess-playing programs. It's stated purpose is to aid the user by
showing how matters might end up if the move [at the beginning of the currently
displayed PV] were chosen. The general idea is that the user would have some
basis for selection of alternate moves to avoid undesirable positions,
particularly endgames.

Unfortunately, the position shown in the variation board is typically the last
move of the current PV. That's really unfortunate!!!! Is there not a better
way to select the position for the variation board?

Maybe it's not necessary to tie the variation board's position to the PV? I'm
not sure what else, but if PV's are garbage then the positions shown are garbage
too!

I advocate being nice to users.
