Bob, Yeah, I think this is unfortunate. To be honest, I've never used the variation board in any software. I think this would be better implemented as a tooltip - where putting the cursor over a particular move in any of the engine variations would show a small chessboard. Of course, it might be a good idea to freeze the analysis display (but not the engine) while this is happening. Bob
