Hi Paul, Depending on what you need, don't discount Pocket PC's; probably not much of a difference in playing strength but there seems to be more chess options for pocket pcs. Battery life seems to depend on whether or not the engine is pondering, and how high you set the backlight level. If I'm somewhat conservative with my PPC, I will usually get about 4 - 5 hours or so. My understanding is that Palms generally do a bit better on battery life, but I may be wrong...
