Even though newer programs play much better positional chess, the reality is that on the latest fast computers even a strict no knowledge beast like Fritz 3 will play reasonably well because of the deep searches. The faster the computer the narrower the difference. Programmers haven't been able to match the increases in speed strength so that over time the difference in positional strength beomes less important in comparison to brute forcing by deep searches. However there is still a positive difference in positional strength. Whether that is worth the money that programmers charge in relation to free programs like Crafty is open to question, but I value features over strength anyway, since they all beat the hell out of me and with long enough time for analysis on a fast computer it matters little which engine is analyzing for most positions. There is still some difference but not enough to get all hyped up about unless we are considering a program like CSTAL. -- Komputer Korner
