Let's not forget about Ruffian 1.0.x...

The BfF ratings are based on very many games equivalent to 10+ m/g on 1500 MHz:

http://www.beepworld.de/members39/computerschach2/bff-liste.htm

There, Ruffian 1.0.5 is currently listed as best free UCI rated 2690, ranking
just behind King 3.12c (but that was before the recent public release of List
5.12 which is rated 2706). It's a bit unclear with Aristarch, the 4.21 version
of it ranks better than some 4.3x versions. There are List 5.04, but also SOS.3
f.Arena, SmarThink 0.17 and Crafty 19.08 SE in between.

I'd say #1 and #2 free engines are List 5.12 and Ruffian 1.0 (in unknown order
since their margins of error overlap), and for #3 there are several candidates
:-)

These are most probably the strongest *free* engines for all protocols, although
IIRC there was a Fritz 6 version on the magazine CD of a german computergames
magazine (not chess specific). But that wasn't really free in the common sense.

OTOH, I've read that currently there's a Fritz 8 (!) version in german shops for
only 4.99 Euros! So, the freeware and commercial sector are giving each other a
hard time :-))
