Dear Larry and other CCC members,

Remember Boris the chess computer that scrolled out phrases or the Fidelity
talking chess computers? Imagine a computer that screamed obscenities or begged
for mercy when you were winning or laughed sarcastically when you made a boner.
I have some simple strategy games like Othello that I have substituted the wav.
files on that are hilarious. The one that I really like is the voice of the
Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz, shrilly crying "I'm melting,
.....melting.(with the sizzle of water on a hot plate) The contrast is a sultry
woman laughing at me. When I make a mistake a little girls voice comes on
saying, " You made a boo boo" This is very similar to the Battle Chess program.

I think that most of us are really violent and use chess as an escape valve.
That is why games like "Quake" and "Duke Nukem" are so popular. As the
computers become more potent and the OS more sophisticated ie. 64 bit systems
coming out next year, we shall have both strong programs and human-like
interaction. If it becomes too human like it could possibly, as you say, drive
us more mad.

Then again, I would love having Helen Hunt as a virtual opponent speaking softly
to me. What would our wives/girlfriends think????
