The way I do it is by thinking about the resulting endgame. Of course, this is just the way I do it. So, how does KQPkrr suit you? Another is KNBPkrp. The lone rook could have trouble with coordinated pieces. A book I read said that it is important for the pieces to work together and have support. So, KBBN vs kq has advantages for white especially if there are some pawns to support/defend the whites pieces. I'd like to hear a more definitive statement myself !!
